Through our many programs and services, Walton Options is out and about in the CSRA and SC Low Country every week. This work has created many great partnerships and relationships that allow us to assist our consumers even more. Below are a some of the latest projects we have participated in out in the community.
Augusta Transit Ground Breaking Ceremony
IL Advocates Elizabeth and Gaylon joined Augusta’s City Officials and Transit staff at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the new Augusta Transit Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility. The new facility will feature two buildings – one for operations, maintenance and administration and a second for servicing such as fueling and cleaning.
The event took place at 2844 Regency Boulevard, Augusta. Gaylon has been appointed as the District 6 Representative for the Richmond County Transit Citizens Advisory Committee by Commissioner Ben Hasan. We are very excited to have Gaylon representing the disability community in the Augusta area.
Caregivers Luncheon
Members of the Home and Community Based Services and Assistive Technology team attended the Caregivers Luncheon at Warren Baptist Church to honor persons in the community that are fore those unable to care for themselves. The team had a great time celebrating the supporters of the disability community in the CSRA.
South Carolina Advocacy Day for Access & Independence
On Wednesday April 26, 2017, a group of over 25 staff and consumers from the North Augusta and Walterboro offices made the trip to Columbia, South Carolina to show their support for the annual South Carolina Advocacy Day for Access & Independence. The day included a rally on the State House Steps with speakers from across the state representing a wide spectrum of the disability community. The speakers were advocating for changes to transportation, employment, housing, and public access across the state of South Carolina that would mean true independence and access to all aspects of life.
The staff and consumers participated on a variety of levels. Some were speakers during the rally talking about parenting as a person with a disability, barriers to marriage as a person with a disability, and access to transportation as a person with a disability. Other consumers and staff visited their local legislatures and dropped off information about ways they could make an impact in unlocking the barriers that the disability community faces.
Comcast Impact made a Stop at Our Offices
Comcast NBCUniversal surprised us with a visit one Saturday in April with volunteers, supplies and time. As part of the Comcast Cares Day, a day designed for the Comcast Corporation to give back to the community, the Augusta and North Augusta offices received some much need indoor and outdoor maintenance. We cannot thank them enough for their efforts and work that will benefit not only the staff but also the consumers who come to our offices.
Adult Learning Series at Euchee Creek Library
This Spring, we have been at the Euchee Creek Library in Grovetown hosting a series of Independent Life Skills Classes for adults. Each week, we have been at the library teaching an hour long class on different topics related to life skills, similar to those we teach at the Augusta Office. We have had a great turnout and look forward to continuing our work in Grovetown.
Walton Foundation for Independence Chilly Chili Cook-Off
In March we participated in the Walton Foundation for Independence Chilly Chili Cook-Off. The event was designed to not only enjoy some great food but also to benefit adaptive sports and leisure programs for people with disabilities right here in the CSRA. Thanks to our IL Advocate Laquita Logan’s Alabama Hamma Recipe, we received runner up for Best Chili! Jeannie Jackson had us covered in the soups and cornbread category too.
