2018 Summer Life Skills Classes Announced

Do you have a desire to live more independent? Are you ready to breakout on your own? Let Walton Options assist you with daily living skills to make your goals reality.

Our Life Skills Training Classes are designed specifically for persons with disabilities looking to gain and maintain their independence. We can work with you in a variety of areas including home management skills to maintain your household, understanding health and nutritious meals, organizational skills, forward planning, money management, and a whole lot more.

Personal Growth DevelopmentJuly 12, 2018

Everyone has the opportunity to grow on a variety of personal levels including intellectually, emotionally, and economically. Persons with disabilities are no exception! Join us as we share personal experiences and discuss self-improvement activities such as enhancing employment skills, increasing positive consciousness, and building financial support. With the right techniques, methods, and tools, you can achieve a variety of personal goals and aspirations.

Join us for an insightful afternoon as we discuss a variety of techniques and strategies on how to organize your home or everyday tasks more effectively. There will even be a chance for participants to share techniques and tricks that have worked for them.

Self-Advocacy – August 2, 2018

Did you know as a person with a disability you have rights and a voice? Do you know that self-advocacy reaches beyond the realm of politics? We can help you understand the different types of advocacy there are as well as how you can advocate for yourself as well as others. Our Self-Advocacy class explains the Americans with Disabilities Act and state level disability rights you have and how the law benefits you in your home, community, and workplace. Join us to learn how to have your voice heard!

Money Management – August 9, 2018

Are you ready to hone & improve your money management skills? During our Money Management Class, you can learn about managing your personal finances including checking and savings accounts, paying bills, understanding credit & interest rates, the advantages of budgeting, and much more in the process to becoming more financially responsible.

Emergency Preparedness – August 16, 2018

An emergency can strike at any time, to anyone – don’t be caught off guard! Join us as we learn about different types of emergencies including natural disasters and how to be prepared when emergencies happen. We will highlight best practices for Emergency Preparedness Kits and how to access resources before, during, and after emergencies. We will also highlight the additional areas persons with disabilities should be aware of when preparing and facing emergencies to maintain their safety, health, and well-being.

Identity Theft – August 23, 2018

Your identity is unique, distinctive, and valuable. Because of the ease of technology use in today’s digital world, identity theft is on the rise and much more common than you think. Our Identity Theft Class will help you understand the importance of safe-guarding your identity, techniques and strategies to avoid identity theft, and what you can do if you are affected by identity theft. Don’t wait until it is too late – let us help you be proactive in protecting your identity.

Community Resources – August 30, 2018

Living, working, and playing in your community is a goal we all work towards. Sometimes we need a little assistance in one or more areas to gain or maintain independence in our communities. But not everyone knows about the variety of programs that are available for them. That is why we set up our Community Resources Class. We educate you about community services & programs including housing & shelters, health care facilities, transportation, employment resources, food & clothing resources, child care options, financial assistance resources, and many more.

Mind Your Awareness: Self Awareness & Empowerment – September 6, 2018

Would you like to learn more about your personality style, self-awareness, and ways to build self confidence? Our training gives you the tools for all that and more. You will learn how self-awareness can not only help your confidence but also help you understand how to redirect your energy into positive understandings and plans for everyday life situations at home, in social settings, at work, and when participating in recreational activities.

Transportation – September 13, 2018
1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
Transportation is a key resource in maintaining your independence in the community. There a variety of different resources available across our area for persons with disabilities. Our Transportation Class introduces you to the different types of transportation available as well as how to effectively utilize them. Whether it’s learning how to obtain your own vehicle, using the public transit system or utilizing apps such as Uber or Lyft, this class will help you understand the ins and outs of personal transportation including accessibility, scheduling, costs, and budgeting.
