“Volunteers don’t
necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”
~ Elizabeth Andrew
Walton Options has many opportunities for
people who wish to serve as volunteers, whether it be as a member of our
Community Action Board in South Carolina, on the planning committee for a
special event or for people that have special talents that they can lend to our
organization.
Walton Options encourages volunteerism for all persons, with or without
disabilities. Some examples include:
Peer to peer support – assisting another person with a disability that may have
questions, special concerns or in need of some direction with regards to
disability. Often the best people to talk to about an issue are the people that
have been there.
Special events volunteers – Several times throughout the year Walton Options
hosts special events in the community. Persons that wish to serve on planning
committees and to help on the day of events are always welcome.
Persons with special talents, such as construction, can provide assistance by
helping to build a ramp, install grab bars or other small modifications for
people with disabilities. Often times Walton Options is able to obtain materials
for the project, but needs volunteers that can provide the labor.
Volunteers that strongly believe in the rights of persons with disabilities and
welcome the opportunity to advocate in the community to make improvements that
allow people with disabilities the access to services and community living that
the rest of us enjoy. Voting, lack of accessible transportation and limited
access to employment and community services are all issues that still plague our
community when it comes to disability rights.
