Employment Services: Walton Options Employment Service objective is to help people of all disabilities find their own unique pathway to employment.

Classroom Facility Environment: The training classes facility is designed for convenience and easy accessibility. The classroom is designed to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities.  The classroom contains height adjustable desks, multimedia classroom materials, and a one to six trainer to student ratio. The classroom has several new Dell computers with current Microsoft operating system and MS office.  Each computer also has a networked wireless Internet connection.  When classes are not in session, the lab is open as a self-directed lab where job seekers can work independently on their career path.  Assistive Technology for computer accessibility is readily available for software including:  Jaws, Zoom text, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.  Other computer hardware is available such as large print keyboards, a Brailler, CCTV, headsets, microphones and synthesizers.

Curriculum Course Description

Basic Business Communications: To learn effective basic business communication skills to communicate effectively and professionally in today’s workplace. 

Entrepreneurial Know How: Students will be able to utilize exercise that will help determine if starting a business is for them. The students will be able to learn of different business structure they will learn how to access federal, local grants, and to learn of different type of financing such as loans. Students will be exposed to local speakers from SCORE and the Small Business League. Students will learn about barriers to self-employment, franchising opportunities, and census statistics regarding disability and employment.

Personal Growth: Classes are designed to provide information/assignments/discussion for students to learn and practice skills needed for effective communication in the work place.

Computer Training: Each course will be broken down into Basic and Advanced in the (6) weeks system. It is the building block analogy so each week builds on the previous.  A student must begin at the beginning of a six-week period to understand the concepts of the basic applications before participating in the advanced section or the second half of a six-week period

Identifying Your Skills: Skills assessment is the first step into determining career goals. WOIL employment services utilize computer-based and traditional technology to assess vocational needs. The purpose of these class sessions will be to help students determine skills level, type of work desired, and transferable skill, etc. WOIL Employment Services offers job search support from job Skill Trainers, as well as a variety of job search resources that will aid in the development of your personalized plan to return to work.

Professional Office Skills and Soft Skill Development: Students will learn to interact with the public by telephone and in person. Learn techniques to use when dealing with angry customers and learning tactics for keeping your decorum when dealing with stressful situations beyond your control. Telephone etiquette, how to maintain organization with files and records, and the hands on experience of learning office technology are all part of this course.

Basic and advanced keyboarding: Pretest is given to evaluate skills, with progress tests at the end of each exercise and a final keyboarding test to measure overall improvement. Students will become familiar with the different keys, learn the proper placement of fingers for home-row keys, learn how to navigate the keyboard and develop increasing accuracy and speed.

Job Interviewing Skills: Students will learn about the proper interview techniques, and some of the common mistakes that happen in interviews. They will learn about the choosing appropriate attire for interviews, how early to arrive, what employers are wanting in prospective candidates, proper body etiquette during an interviews and how to negotiate the salary and compensation.  Interview follow up procedures will also be discussed. Students will be able to participate in mock interviews.

Resume Development: In this class students will basically learn the do and don’t of resume writing. The Employment Service will have available to students the Resume Win way Software to help with this process. There will be discussion on Format and preferred style of résumé. Create cover letters and review tips and pointers on follow-up procedures, etc.
