Home Modification Programs – Operation Independence

Walton Options has successfully been providing home modification services to persons with disabilities and the elderly for 10 years, much of which has been through partnership with the CSRA Area Agency on Aging, and the Statewide Independent Living Council of Georgia. Walton Options provides approximately 125 home modifications per year to this segment of our community.  Walton Options’ rapport with local licensed and bonded contractors enables us to secure high quality workmanship at competitive prices, with our contractors exceeding the ADA requirements for accessibility modifications.  In 2007, Walton Options was again named a partner contract administrator with the Georgia Home Access program from the Department of Community Affairs.  This program has enabled Walton Options to assist consumers who may need home modification services that normal funding streams cannot support.  In 2007 Walton Options was also awarded a grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation for home modifications in South Carolina.

 Home modification and repair is important because:

It can help prevent accidents such as falls since research suggests that one-third to one-half of all home accidents can be prevented by modifications and repair.

It can allow people to remain in their homes.

It can accommodate lifestyle changes and increase comfort.

Over 60% of older people tend to live in homes more than 20 years old, they are more likely to need repairs and modifications.

Referrals for home modification services are prioritized by need as well as grouped according to county and/or general location of the consumer’s home.  This grouping enables the Operation Independence staff to be as cost effective and efficient as possible when providing the services. 

There is a waiting list for these services, however, our work with area volunteer groups, churches and other organizations enables us to be resourceful when working to help you or your loved one get needed home modifications. The majority of these modifications are offered at reduced cost to qualifying individuals.
