Walton Options for Independent Living serves as a Technology Resource Center, operating as part of the Georgia Tools for Life Project created through the Federal Tech Act and offers a wide array of assistive technology (AT). Through a grant from the Department of Labor, Walton Options is able to offer assistance to persons with disabilities who can use technology to help them in performing daily tasks with minimal or no assistance from others. This allows them to work and live more independently. Assistive technology may be as simple as a hand held shower sprayer or a writing utensil that is adapted to allow it to be held by someone that cannot hold a regular pen; or as complex as a laptop computer programmed to be able to speak for a person who has difficulty vocalizing. Walton Options is also a part of the STAR Network, working with other agencies throughout the state to obtain, refurbish and redistribute AT to consumers who need these items and cannot afford to purchase them otherwise. Wheelchairs, transfer benches, computers and other items are available through our STAR Outreach Program. Loan fees or nominal required contribution (often a fraction of the value) are a part of obtaining AT through the STAR and TFL programs. A Walton Options IL Advocate will be able to assist you in finding the correct piece of AT to suit your individual needs.
